Today my guest is contemporary artist Claire Murray. Based in West Yorkshire, Claire is internationally renowned for her wide range of artworks which evoke multiple reactions. Her concepts deal with light and colour as an open window and allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions while appreciating the simplicity of beauty. What drew me to Claire’s work was that it seemed to be created from many different approaches and I wasn’t surprised to find that Claire has experience with other forms including photography, stitching, and collage. We had an open and honest conversation about art and how it is perceived in an ever encroaching digital environment which can be daunting for those who seek originality. Claire was a wonderful guest, so I hope you are sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us.
I began our conversation by asking Claire about the versatility of her work and whether that was a goal for her as an artist (03:03), how the Internet has been a positive tool for artists (06:23), and if she ever considered producing a piece work in a live context (09:30). I then asked Claire about her inspiration for art (12:08), her time away from painting (16:53), avoiding artist’s block (21:57) and working in a constantly developing digital environment (26:50). Towards the end of our conversation, I asked Claire if she has any advice for young artists (35:55), about the story behind her book Another World Paintings 2017 to 2021 (43:15), and what she is reading and watching at the moment (47:35).
