Today my guest is Counselling Psychologist Niamh Delmar. Specialising in mental health and psychological distress, Niamh is involved with assessment, treatment and relapse prevention. She has over ten years’ experience as a training consultant for major organisational settings and provides mental health talks and workshops. Niamh is also a freelance writer and has also been a guest on various radio shows and is a mental health educator. I was keen to explore how important mental health is in our societies and was delighted to have Niamh as a guest, so I hope you are sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us.
We began our conversation with me asking Niamh about the area that she chose and why (02:35), the challenges women face in society (04:21), and the pressures of isolation due to a more digital lifestyle (05:17). We then discussed the importance of being self-aware of mental health issues (06:40), dealing with stress in our lives (08:25), and the difficulties of trying to be successful in what we do (09:08). Next we talked about the issues of de-platforming on social media (12:40), dealing with bullying (17:02), and advice on avoiding taking work home (21:04). In the second half of our chat, I asked Niamh about the environments we live in and if it affects our everyday lives (26:15), about her article on the pressures of parenting (27:04), and the current standard of childcare in Ireland (30:00). Towards the end of our conversation I asked Niamh to give some advice for those thinking of taking up Psychology (33:07), before finishing with me asking Niamh what she is reading and listening to at the moment (38:52).
