AI, Canva, and the Creative Future: Surfing Design’s Next Wave with Simon Roche

Design was never about the visuals, it was about communication of an idea… if AI starts doing a good job of that, then brilliant.

Today my guest is graphic designer Simon Roche. Simon is a Product Design Director who builds products and design systems in education and tech. Simon has worked in many fields in the last 20+ years as a designer, and produced work for international clients from Denmark to Australia, as well as for many Irish businesses through cultural work, branding and editorial design. I was keen to chat with Simon about his career and the new concepts and tools being used in the graphic design industry, so I hope you are sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us.

Our conversation started at the beginning of Simon’s career as he explained his route from design college to teaching and eventually to working full time as a graphic designer (01:21), his time as a member of the team at Irish music magazine Hot Press (07:33), and how he started working with digital design tools (14:10). We then touched on using DIY design platforms like Canva (21:37), the growing use of AI as a form of art and design (28:18), and his work with Bureau (33:50). We finished our conversation with me asking Simon what he is watching and listening to at the moment (39:25).
