The Lost Art of Gathering: How We Forgot Community and How to Find It Again”

There’s a definite possibility that those generations being born now will shun the internet entirely. And even the good parts of its uses will not be good to them because they’ll have seen the bad and they’ll just go, ‘I want none of it.’”

Today, my guest is blogger and podcast producer Jason Stershic. Since 2011, Jason has been roaming the internet as Agent Palmer. He has appeared on many podcasts and is a producer of several shows. In 2019, Jason expanded the Palmer brand by launching The Palmer Files podcast. He is an editor of self-published books, and a digital consultant to many.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to be a guest on The Palmer Files podcast, where we had a great conversation about podcasting and mental health in the digital age. I invited Jason to The Comfortable Spot to continue exploring these themes, so I hope you’re sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us.

We began our conversation by discussing how radio has abandoned the art of long-form conversation (01:13) before comparing our shared passion for podcasting and how we keep that passion fresh (05:30). We then delved into the future of podcasting and the challenges of reaching larger audiences (21:44). Next, we shifted topics to the current state of the United States, where I asked Jason whether a lack of care for one another is being amplified by profiteers (33:40). We wrapped up by reflecting on the decline of real-world communities and why we should strive to engage more in physical spaces rather than solely in digital ones (45:50).
